I’m a recent graduate from the University of
Guelph-Humber where I graduated with honours with a Bachelor of
Applied Arts degree in Media Studies and a diploma in
Journalism.
Currently, I am a freelance writer for many magazines and
newspapers. I am a beauty writer and copy editor for Desi Youth
Magazine, a music correspondent for Alberta-based magazine Karma
Magazine and I am a fashion/beauty events writer for Prospere
Magazine where I had the opportunity to cover prestigious
fashion and beauty events including Toronto’s LG Fashion Week.
Journalism has always been my passion. I was intrigued with the
idea that I can make a difference through the media and that I
would be given the important role to inform and educate. Being a
journalist gives me the opportunity to walk in someone else’s
shoes through interviewing and being a journalist definitely
suits my inquisitive nature.
Since I was in high school, I knew I wanted to pursue a career
involving writing. In my final year of high school, I started
writing for the Next Step Magazine, a magazine geared to high
school students entering post-secondary education. The magazine
was published throughout the States and Canada. From that
experience, I then became an entertainment reporter/writer for
One-80 Youth Magazine which was published throughout the GTA.
Through this experience, I had the opportunity to interview such
celebrities as R&B singer Massari and rapper Kardinal Offishall.
Throughout university, I wrote for many magazines and newspapers
including Campus Starter Magazine, Campus X Magazine, The Weekly
Voice, The Indian Express-North American Edition, desiclub.com
(U.S., U.K, Canada), and the South Asian Times (New York/ New
Jersey).
In my third year of university, I started volunteering at Rogers
TV Dufferin-Peel where I became a reporter for the local news
program First Local where I covered local news and entertainment
stories. I also pitched story ideas for reports and had the
opportunity to interview Massari.
In my final semester of university, I decided to further my
experience in broadcast journalism and became an intern at
Global News Toronto where I was an intern for their Assignment
Desk. My job entailed assisting the assignment editor and
reporters with research for news reports, filling in for
reporters to cover on-location news events, I conducted
on-camera and phone interviews for reports, found potential
sources, did court reporting and assisted with investigative
news reports.
After graduation, I continued writing and wrote for
entertainment magazine Swagg News which was published in the
States and Canada, South Asian bridal magazine Kohinoor Glitz
and I was a freelance Arts & Entertainment reporter for the
Brampton Guardian.
My ultimate goal is to address issues such as human rights
abuses and humanitarian issues around the world through the
media. I feel as a journalist, that I have the duty to shed
light on issues that are not always covered in the mainstream
media. With my involvement with Miss Canada International, I
hope to get involved with such organizations as Amnesty
International that advocates such issues.
I am excited to be a National Delegate in Miss Canada
International because I think it is a stepping stone to
achieving my goals in life as well as a way to enhance my
overall self-confidence. I would like the opportunity to meet
like-minded women from around Canada while creating memories
that would last a lifetime.
Most importantly, I like what the Miss Canada International
organization represents, which is the importance of education,
giving back to the community and making an overall difference.
I believe that being Miss Canada International goes far beyond
the title. It’s what you do with the title that counts and for
me this is a platform for me to discuss and address various
issues, to get involved with charitable organizations, to make a
change, and it gives me the opportunity to be an ambassador for
Canada. |
